The Last DJ

Lyrics
The last DJ
Well you can't turn him into a company man
You can't turn him into a whore
And the boys upstairs just don't understand anymore
Well the top brass don't like him talking so much,
And he won't play what they say to play
And he don't want to change what don't need to change
There goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say, hey hey hey?
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ
Well some folks say they're gonna hang him so high
'Cause you just can't do what he did
There are some things you just can't put in the minds of those kids
As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see
How much you'll pay for what you used to get for free
There goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say, hey hey hey?
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ
Well he got him a station down in Mexico
And sometimes it'll kind of come in
And I'll bust a move and remember how it was back then
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say, hey hey hey?
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice.
And there goes the last DJ
History
The song "The Last Dj" was written by Tom Petty and performed by him and the Heartbreakers. The song was released September 23, 2002 and was said to be influenced by a story of a Dj from Jacksonville, FL who moved to Mexico after becoming feed up with being limited on what he could play.
The Message
The message behind "The Last Dj" is that the music industry is turning its artist into slaves and as time goes on eventually only what the music industry allows will be played, that's where the reference "The Last Dj" comes from. The fear artist's creativity being completely restricted to the point where their lyrics don't even mean anything anymore to them. Music is meant for not just the artist but for he/she listeners and listener respond better to  authenticity because that raw emotion is what makes the music real and relatable. Putting guidelines on musicians are only gonna harm the music industry in the long run and that's what Tom Petty was trying to convey in his song.

Black Mirror: Nosedive

Black Mirror is a Netflix original series  that shows the worse possible outcomes of the use our obsessive use of technology. We watched one particular episode called "Nosedive" that was about a world that based ones value off of their ranking. Ranked 1-5, people were forced to create a false persona of themselves in order to receive 5 stars during any human interaction. The main character of this episode became so obsessed with having a high ranking that it caused her ultimate downfall but also opened her eyes to a whole new life of honestly and happiness. This episode, though over exaggerated, showed how much people base their worth on social media popularity and what others think of them and those who didn't care and had "low rankings" were the happiest.

Keyboard Cat

History: What a lot of people don't know is that the original Keyboard Cat video was actually made in 1984 as a funny home video then later became a YouTube and internet sensation when the video was uploaded to YouTube in 2007. The baggy blue T-shirt wearing feline's name was "Fastso" but Schmidt later changed the title to "Charlie Schmidt's Keyboard Cat". My thoughts:  This video was very creative and the first of its kind with many to follow after. Defiantly one of the more know viral videos that is still used today in sitcoms and televisions shows.

Summary

The excerpt from the article " The Long Trail" is about a speaker comparing his limited media experiences as an adolescence in the seventies and eighties to unlimited options of the common day adolescence of the twentieth century. He sums up both experiences in two words, niches and hits. Meaning, in the seventies and eighties technology wasn't as advance as it was today and there was very limited options for mass communication. Therefore, in order to reach the big screen or any screen for that matter, what you did had to be major or in others words, a hit. But now that the things like the internet, cellphones, and game system have allowed the media to become more accessible reaching the big screen is at the click of a button. Now a days one doesn't have to be very talented in order to get screen time, anyone can do.And instant fame is not the only thing offer, the twentieth century technology as offered unlimited options of music, shopping, and entertainment.
